UWE Opens New Centre for Sport

Students at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol are reaping the benefits of a fantastic new Centre for Sport.

Located on the Frenchay Campus, the £5 million facility opened in August 2006, making this the first academic year it has been available for use by both the students and staff of the University, as well as the local community.

The multi-activity site includes a large eight badminton court sports hall with wooden sprung floor, two glass backed squash courts, Life Fitness equipped Fitness Suite, aerobics studio and all weather pitch.

Alex Isaac, Sport Development Manager for the University, says: “We went through a thorough tender process and selected Life Fitness on the quality of the equipment and its reputation for reliability.”

The extensive Fitness Suite features 43 pieces of CV equipment and 22 resistance machines, together with a large free weights area, making it ideal for sports specific and functional training. The centre has recruited an ACSM qualified Strength and Conditioning Manager and team of instructors to support the students who are part of the Advanced Athletes Group, as well as all the members and clubs using the facility.

Alex adds: “Our main aims have been to raise the profile of sport within the Institution and in turn improve our BUSA ranking, and also to promote our high quality facilities externally and encourage potential students to come here.”

The Fitness Suite is open seven days a week, and offers different tiers of membership for students, staff and the general public.

UWE is part of a consortium with other local education establishments, which has submitted a bid to become a future training camp for the London 2012 Olympics.
