Life Fitness Cyclists Break World Record for Children in Need

Nick Hopcroft, Fitness Manager at Esporta Devonshire, has successfully led a six-man team to a world record by cycling a whopping 595 miles in 24 hours. The feat was achieved on a Life Fitness 95Ci Lifecyle at the Esporta Club.

The Club regularly supports the BBC’s “Children in Need” charity and at the end of last year it was decided to do a static cycle ride. Enquiries to Guinness World Records revealed what appeared to be a very achievable target, and an entry was submitted.

Nick kicked off the 24hr attempt at 6pm on Thursday November 16, together with five members of his gym, Kairn Stone, Ian Kendall, Mike Beaton, John Doidge and Nigel Jenkins. The determined cyclists soon settled into a rhythm of 15mins each on the Life Fitness bicycles and 1hr 15mins resting. Nick comments: “The atmosphere was great and the camaraderie kept us going strong throughout the night”.

Their teamwork paid off and with 2 hrs and 40mins to go before the 24hr time limit was up, Nick and his fellow cyclists passed the current world record of 530 miles set just 7 weeks ago by a German team. For good measure, they then went on to manage an extra 65 miles, taking their grand total to 595 miles in 24 hours.

As well as breaking a world record, which is currently awaiting verification by Guinness, Nick and his team raised an impressive £1,500 for Children in Need.

Nick said: “We’re delighted with our performance – it’s great to be able to say that we’re world record holders! It’s also good to know that we contributed to the massive total of over £18M that was raised on the BBC’s Children in Need appeal night.”
