Harbour Club, Chelsea, launches innovative new concept

The Harbour Club, Chelsea, was transformed earlier this year through an extensive refurbishment programme. New owners, Next Generation, have invested £2 million to ensure the club retains its exclusivity and remains at the cutting edge of the fitness industry. Part of the project has included a significant extension to the gym and an innovative new approach to the design and layout of the facility, with the creation of ‘Training Pods’ in the resistance area.

Vince Philgence, Health and Fitness Manager at the Harbour Club, explains: “The Harbour Club is unique and has always been at the forefront of the latest advancements and training techniques. We have looked closely at the environment and service we offer and tailored it to meet the needs of our members and trainers.”

The Harbour Club chose Life Fitness to supply both cardiovascular and strength equipment for its new look gym. The concept that has been implemented is geared specifically towards one to one training. The design of the environment feels more open and spacious, while at the same time providing more privacy for the trainer and their client. Areas of the gym have been sectioned off in to ‘Training Pods’ which contain a variety of functional training equipment such as a cable column machine or Dual Adjustable Pulley, swiss ball, medicine ball, and exercise mat, to provide a complete exercise experience. There are also lots of dumbbells available throughout the gym for accessibility and convenience.

Vince explains: “I manage a team of 28 personal trainers, so our focus is very much on individuals and their specific goals. Therefore, we have moved away from traditional fixed resistance machines in preference of cable machines and free weights, as they are more effective at achieving client goals, and offer greater flexibility and training variety. By tailoring the environment in this way and providing our trainers with a versatile selection of tools at their disposal, we are ensuring our members receive the highest levels of service and attention.”

Life Fitness has also supplied 43 pieces of cardiovascular equipment from the 95 series including Treadmills, Cross-Trainers and Lifecycles. Here again, the Harbour Club has adopted a different approach by installing some machines with integrated and attachable entertainment screens, as well as having five big plasma screens on the wall.

Vince continues: “We are very keen to ensure our members have plenty of choice during each visit in order to make their exercise experience as enjoyable as possible. We have had an excellent response to the new facility, and it’s having a positive effect on staff and member retention levels too.”
