New 16.5m Leisure Complex in Pipeline for Dumfries

Life Fitness has been awarded the contract to provide cardiovascular and strength training equipment, including the VIVO connectivity system, for the new £16.5M Dumfries and Galloway Leisure Complex.

Representing the biggest local authority sport-related project in Scotland, the facility will become the flagship site for Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Tommy Sloan, Convener of Dumfries and Galloway Council, said: “This is going to be a building for the twenty first century. A centre of excellence where our athletes of today and tomorrow can train and develop their sporting skills and perhaps get ready to compete in the 2012 Olympics.”

Upon opening in Autumn 2007, the facility’s impressive 280m2 gym will feature 80 stations of Life Fitness cardiovascular equipment, complete with integrated television screens, as well as a full complement of resistance machines. Products from the Signature Series, Hammer Strength Motion Technology Selectorised (MTS) range, Cable Motion Series and a selection of Hammer free weights will ensure that members and users are given every opportunity for logical exercise progression.

Head of the Leisure and Sport Service, Richard Grieveson, comments: “After going through a rigorous procurement and tender process we awarded the contract to Life Fitness as we felt that they offered the best package in terms of quality, service and price. The VIVO connectivity system is the icing on the cake, allowing us to provide truly state-of-the-art exercise equipment as befits a flagship facility.”
The complex is being funded in the main via capital investment from the council. In addition, the South of Scotland European Partnership (SOSEP) is investing £1.6M and Sportscotland is also backing the project with funding of £1.25M.

As well as the gym, facilities at the new complex include: a six-court, multi-purpose sportshall, with accommodation to meet national competition standard for a range of sports and the ability to seat up to 1,200 spectators; a 25m, eight-lane, deck-level, competition pool with tiered seating for 250 spectators; a 20 x 8m training pool with moveable floor; a leisure pool with beach-style access incorporating a range of themed water features together with two flume water rides; conference facilities; a health suite containing a sauna, steam room, spa pool, treatment rooms and relaxation lounge; wet and dry changing facilities; aerobics/dance studio; cafeteria; bar.

The Dumfries and Galloway Sports Complex will replace the existing Dumfries Swimming Pool and Loreburn Hall. Pivotal to the regeneration plans for Dumfries town centre, the facility will also significantly enhance leisure and sport provision throughout the region.
